First of the Summer Wine was written by Roy Clarke OBE as a prequel to his long running series Last of the Summer Wine. Featuring the characters as young people just before the out break of the Second World War, it ran for a pilot episode and two series of six episodes each in 1988 and 1989.
Beautifully made and opening to Al Bowlly’s Sweet and Lovely, the series has been one of my all time favourites since its original broadcasts, combining both humour and pathos. In 2015 I set up a website, www.firstofthesummerwine.wordpress.com, to tell the story of how the series was made and the people who made it, and was delighted to receive a message of support from Roy Clarke for the initiative. Over the ensuing years I have been fortunate to speak to ten of the regular cast members who have shared their memories of working on the series. My thanks to Sarah Dangerfield, Linda Davidson, David Fenwick, Joanne Heywood, Richard Lumsden, Paul McLain, Maggie Ollerenshaw, Helen Patrick, Gary Whitaker and Paul Wyett for their support for the site.
